Blog-block: how to overcome blogging procrastination

by angela.booth on July 8, 2006

Some of my blogging students encounter “blog-block”. It’s a form of writer’s block. I’ve suffered from it myself at various times. You stare at the computer screen without any idea or inspiration for your next blog post.

Why it occurs isn’t important. It’s just a mind-state, and like any mind-state, it will change — time fixes it. Unfortunately, when you’re blogging you want to fix it NOW so that you can write the blog item. :-)

OK, so here we go. Here’s my blog-block cure. It will fix any form of blocking or blogging procrastination, and it’s easy.

Take a large notepad, a pen, and a watch and leave the room where you keep your computer. Go and sit in the garden if you have one, or just park yourself in another room if you don’t.

Look at the watch. For two minutes, you’re going to make a list of words. Just write down any words which come to you. They must be WORDS, not phrases or sentences. They can be nouns (dog, flower, bird), adjectives (clever, beautiful, isolated) or verbs (run, meet, write). Write as fast as you can.

OK? At the end of two minutes, you should have a list of words.

Go and jog around the block, or exercise on your home gym, or do whatever you do that works up a slight sweat.

When you come back, sit down and write your blog post. You may or may not use some of the words you listed. Just write your post.

This method is easy, it works, and if you use it ONCE, you’ll find that it’s influenced your subconscious mind so that it sends up blogging ideas for you on command.
