A career blogger is someone who blogs for others, usually for companies. If you’ve decided that you’d like to dip your toe into these uncharted waters, how do you start? How do you get your first blogging gig?
First, you blog — you start a blog which is specifically a showcase for your abilities. This doesn’t mean that you need to turn it into a CSS extravaganza, although you could, if you’re a Web designer. If you’re not, just create a blog on a topic that you know something about. The blog doesn’t have to be fancy. By all means create a quick Blogger blog, and just start blogging.
I got my first career blogging gig as a result of my writing blog. The company which hired me liked my writing style. They wanted to blog about the release of a new software product: I interviewed several people, and then started to ghost the blog to create some buzz around this product, and it worked.
You’ll ghost the blog: you don’t (usually) get a byline
One point I should mention. Career blogging will not make you famous, because you’re working as a ghostwriter. Five times out of ten, you’ll write a business blog pretending to be the company CEO or chairman, or some other biggie at the company. The other five times, the blog will be anonymous “News” blog, covering the company’s news, as well as the news in their industry, and again, your name will appear nowhere on the blog.
This is fine — take the money. If you’re hungry for fame, become a blog-entrepreneur. ![]()
