You can create a real business out of a blog and an idea.
Here’s a story on RocketBoom (a video blog), which says:
“They created something really new and exciting,” Jarvis said. “Out of nothing came a show, a franchise, a medium.”
This past March, money started coming in. Rocketboom held an eBay auction of its first ads. It sold one for $40,000, and another for $80,000.
However, just as with any business, you need to build the business, so don’t be fooled that you can retire to the Bahamas a week after you create your blog.
