When you blog, you want readers, but for new bloggers the “What if I gave a party and no one came?” syndrome is a real worry.
It’s an unfounded concern. You WILL get readers, because whatever your interests are, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people share those interests. For example, I’m interested in books, writing, dogs, and photography. Pretty common interests, and pretty easy to start a blog (or a couple of blogs) on any one of those topics, and monetize the blog.
Tip: Your interest is in itself interesting. Your enthusiasm about your topic will attract others. Therefore, for your first blog, choose a topic that you’re absorbed in. Ideally, choose a topic that you’d blog about if no one else ever read the blog.
When you’re new to blogging, just start a blog. About anything.
It will take you at least a week to become comfortable blogging — to build your blogging muscles, so to speak.
Don’t like your topic? Leave it
You may decide not to continue with a blog. OK. Just leave it. Toss some Google AdSense ads onto the blog, and leave it. No one will mind, or care.
Start a blog on another topic. Sooner or later, you’ll find a topic you enjoy, and you enjoy blogging about.
If the idea of WRITING scares you, don’t write. Podcast (create an audio blog), or take photos (photo blog) or videos (vlog). Hugh at gapingvoid has a wonderful blog of cartoons drawn on the back of business cards.
Career blogger: the money-motivator
When you’re hired to blog for a business, MONEY is a great motivator. You’re hired, so you blog. You’ll be amazed at what you find to blog about, even when the topic is of no real interest to you. However, to become a pro career blogger, you need to develop a first blog, that will act as your blogging portfolio.
So start blogging. You’ll get readers. If you don’t, come back here and ask me what to do. I’ll be glad to help.
