Your blog is Internet real estate: it’s a real business

When you start blogging, you may get a lot of weird looks when you tell people that your blog is your business. However, YOU know it’s a real business, don’t you?

One of my hobbies is buying domain names. I’ve got a tiny collection, compared to people who have tens of thousands of domains, but I look on my domains as they do: as Internet real estate and an investment. Visit DN Journal magazine to get a quick overview of the domaining scene.

You blog is Internet real estate: it’s a business you’re building. If it’s your first blog, and you started it on a free service like Blogger, that’s fine. You’ll want to buy a domain name for your blog however. That makes it easier to sell your blog eventually.

You can do what you like on your own domain
The big benefit of buying your own domain for your blog is that no one can close you down. A friend owned ten blogs on a free service, and suddenly found that he was banned from the service. He maintains that he did nothing wrong, but to date his protests haven’t done him any good. His business vanished overnight.
