Make money blogging: Keep control of your content

by angela.booth on August 3, 2006

OK, you’re blogging. But who owns the content? Who, effectively, owns your blog?

You may be surprised. Where there’s content (text, images, sound, video etc) there are people and businesses who’re looking to make money from it.

Heather Green of Blogspotting writes in “Ze Frank, YouTube, and Making Money”:

Frank is deliberately trying to create a show and a brand and he wants to figure out a way to support himself. That’s why he chose to upload his videos on Revver, a videos sharing service that shares revenues. But just as important, he’s trying to keep control of the archive of his shows so that sometime in the future he can figure out a way to make money with them.

Bingo.

When you’re a blog entrepreneur, not every blog you create will be your attempt to create a brand for yourself, however the blog’s content is still valuable.

Even if you’re not making money NOW, you’ll figure it out. You will make money from your blog’s content eventually, but only if you keep control of that content.

Many blogs have Creative Commons licenses, which means they release some rights. However, I’ve chosen to keep full rights to all the material on this blog — I don’t allow anyone to license the material. Of course that doesn’t mean that people won’t STEAL, and I can’t prevent that — although I can have them shut down via the DMCA if I find out about it. :-)

Tip: Work out what rights you want to keep; and keep them.
