Blog marketing: developing a marketing strategy for your blog

by angela.booth on August 4, 2006

How’s your blog marketing strategy? If you said “WHAT marketing strategy?” :-) get started by reading “Internet Marketing Strategy” on the Marketing Opus blog to get some ideas on how to develop a marketing strategy.

Market every day

I’m a great believer in constant marketing: for each project I have in development, I aim to do at least one marketing task a day. This doesn’t always work, because deadlines and crises get in the way, but it’s worked for me for years, so I don’t have to think about marketing each day, I just do it.

Choose one marketing tactic a month, or quarter

Each month for some projects, and each quarter for others, I choose an over-arching marketing method. It could be:

* Article marketing – writing articles for other sites to promote a project;

* News releases;

* SEO (search engine optimization) and organic search;

* SEM (search engine marketing).

With my major method chosen, I just plod along, doing a little every day. I’m always marketing, and it pays off, because all marketing that you do is cumulative.

Slow and steady wins: all marketing is cumulative

Marketing takes time. In SEO for example, it can take three to six months, and longer in some cases, to see the results of your efforts. Marketing is never a quick fix. Of course, if you’re willing to spend big, you can spend your way to success, and this works for many businesses: they spend a dollar, to make a dollar and fifty cents. However, even if you choose to take the spend-big route, you still need a foundation of marketing.

By the way, my new ezine, Top Words, will give you an idea a week that you can use to market your blog(s).
