As more and more companies discover the benefits of blogging, they look for someone to handle this function for them. Months before they advertise for a blogger, or find a staff member who wants to blog, they’re open to approaches from bloggers.
These companies are potential clients for your freelance blogging business, so how do you let them know that you’re available?
Without blogging credits and a Web site that’s getting traffic, the easiest, cheapest and FASTEST way is to write a press release and send it to your local media. In my copywriting classes, I have students send out localized press releases to advertise their copywriting services business in the second week. The students are always surprised when they’re approached by journalists and get a story in the local paper, and when they’re interviewed on radio and TV shows. I’m used to hearing “Wow! It works!”
So write a press release – here’s a template. Send the release to your local newspaper editors, TV news directors and radio programming directors. Vital: don’t stop at one release. Your first press release should be the start of a press campaign, so send out a release once a week until you’ve got more blogging work than you can handle.
