Steve Pavlina has a fascinating post on his blog, “How Much Is a Blog Post Worth? Would You Believe $2400 Each?” about the value of a single blog post, over time.

He says:

Recently I read Darren Rowse’s enlightening post about bloggers-for-hire being paid on a per-post basis. Darren says the going rate being offered is around $2 to $20 per post… sometimes as high as $100 per post. That’s a flat one-time fee with no residuals. If such bloggers stop writing, they stop earning. And apparently there’s no shortage of bloggers willing to work for such rates.

You can’t make money blogging at $20 or even $100 a post
When you’re blogging for others, no matter how much they pay you, you’re not building value for yourself.

When I blogged for companies, I was well aware that the long term value that I created for the business was much, much more than I was being paid. However, the true value for me was in the experience.

I needed the experience to know:

* How long it takes to research and write a blog post;

* How many posts I could write a day, and in a week, and keep the posts interesting, traffic-generating and link-worthy;

* The mechanics of blogging - how long a post takes to be indexed, how to use keywords in a post, how to use the social media to add value, etc. This experience was priceless - it had to be done, so I certainly didn’t begrudge the relatively low pay.

You’ll need to go through the same learning experiences, so that you know how blogging works. However, once you do know how it works, it’s time to start thinking of your blogging in the same way that Steve Pavlina does, and as I do.

This doesn’t mean that you’ll follow someone else’s business model or plan. My business model is different from Steve Pavlina’s, and yours will be different again.

What won’t change is the long term value of all your blogging efforts. In my ebook, I show you how to create a business from blogging, and the value of your business is what you increase each time you blog. Once you begin to look at the long term value of your blogs, you will realize that each post you write is very valuable, and worth the time you devote to it.
