Blogging success: how long does it take to build traffic?

by angela.booth on October 2, 2006

Every new blogger wants to know how long it takes to build high traffic to their blog.

The answer? It depends on your blog’s topic. And how long you’ve been blogging consistently. This length of time basically means the size of your blog – someone who’s been writing three blog posts a day for two years will get more traffic than someone who’s been writing two posts a week for six months.

It also depends on your efforts at promotion – read my article “Get Blog Traffic: Five Easy Ways To Promote Your Blog” to discover how to promote your blog.

Your blog’s topic
If you’ve chosen a low-traffic topic for your blog, then you’ll get less traffic because fewer people are searching for information on that topic in the search engines. For example, let’s say your blog’s topic is “Mac software”. According to the Keyword Suggestion tool, WordTracker estimates 220 searches a day.

The size of your blog
A blog is a Web site. Although it’s easier, generally speaking, to get traffic to a new blog than it is to a new Web site, the longer you’ve been blogging, and the more bulk your blog develops, the more opportunities you give for people to find you via the search engines.

For example, my writing blog has been online for two years, and the traffic has been building steadily. Almost 100 per cent of the traffic is from the search engines, and 90 per cent of that traffic is from Google. Given another year or two, that blog will generate even more traffic. However, as with all sites, that blog’s traffic limit is set by its topic: there aren’t that many searches online each day for “writing”.
