Blogging for money can seem like hard work, especially when you’re not gaining much traffic – not enough traffic to monetize, in other words.
The traffic (and the money) is in your archives
Be patient. Although your blog posts are indexed quickly, it takes time for your blog posts to be completely indexed, and to start appearing in search results. It also takes time to build up a readership.
I estimate that it takes around a month for blog items to start appearing in search results regularly. With Angela Booth’s Writing Blog, which is currently my “oldest” blog, I get the most traffic from the oldest posts. There are various ways in which you can use these older items to boost your traffic – if a blog post is popular for example, you can write more on that particular topic, because your audience wants more information.
Think of each blog post you make as a deposit in a blogging bank account. Each small post will repay its value to you over time.
Keep your eye on the blogging ball: avoid “cat” posts
I’ve noticed with bloggers who run out of steam that they start to lose focus. They forget the original purpose of their blog, and produce “cat” posts – that is posts relating to their daily lives, or something amusing, but without any real value to their audience over time.
There’s nothing wrong with the occasional off-topic post, in fact your readers will enjoy a personal tone, but keep your focus on your blog’s purpose, and you’ll gain traffic, and dollars.
