Blogging goals: Give yourself a target and beat blog boredom

by angela.booth on October 20, 2006

I’ve had a couple of questions this week about “blog boredom”. Both bloggers had started blogs around two months ago, and were finding blogging a strain.

Blog boredom usually sets in before you start getting significant traffic from the search engines. It takes time for your blog to become indexed, and even after the blog starts becoming indexed, if you’ve chosen a very competitive area, your blog entries may not appear in the search engines results pages (SERPs) for queries for endless months.

So, you figure, well, no one’s reading this, I’m dead, I should go and eat worms rather than writing more of this cr*p… etc.

This is depression, and it often shows up as boredom.

Snap out of it!

Behind the scenes, a lot is happening. You’re building trust, and establishing a presence in the search engines, with other bloggers, and with your public.

Set blogging targets with rewards

You need to rebuild your enthusiasm, and one way of doing it is by making blogging a game. With rewards.

For example, you could set a goal of three posts a day, for three days – your reward? A new DVD game, or a nice meal at a restaurant, or whatever floats your boat and makes you eager to blog.

Or, set a goal of 50 posts. If you complete the 50 posts, give yourself a real treat, like a weekend mini-break holiday, or similar.

Set yourself targets so you can move through this phase with any blog; before very long, you’ll be enthused and inspired by the traffic that your blog is generating, and will no longer be bored.
