Blog hosting: Where do you host your blog?

by angela.booth on March 2, 2007

The email message only contained one line – “My blog’s gone! Help!”

I replied immediately, to get more information, because the sender had purchased my blogging ebook, and his blog was starting to generate income.

After many back-and-forth emails over several days, we were no nearer to solving the mystery.

Yes, his blog was gone – vanished.

Unfortunately, since he was hosting his blog on a free service, and they were ignoring his emails, there isn’t much he can do, unless and until his provider decides to help him out.

Free blog hosting can be dangerous

If you’re serious about making a good income from blogging, where you host your blogs is important. Initially, using free resources is fine, but when you host your blog at a free service, you have no real control.

Anything can happen, and the worst sometimes does happen.

I like the free blogging platforms, but this is the fourth instance I’ve heard of of blogs disappearing, so I’m now recommending that if at all possible, you buy a domain name and hosting. It’s just plain safer.

My current host, Hostgator, is great, and I highly recommend them, as do many other people. I’ve only needed help once, and the response to my email message was just about instantaneous – within five minutes or so. Pretty good service.
