Blogging For Beginners: How to Create a WordPress Blog

WordPress is a popular blogging application that you can use to create a very professional looking blog. Blogs boost your site’s traffic and help you build relationships and trust with your visitors. The more trust your readers have in you, the more likely they are to become your customer. Blogs are also great money-makers.

There are two ways to set up a WordPress blog. You can install the blog on your own server. If your web host includes Fantastico, you can install your blog with the push of a button. The benefit to this is that you can pick your own, unique blog address. For instance, your blog address can be www.yourdomain.com/blog.

You can also get a free blog at www.wordpress.com and let WordPress host it for you. Your blog’s URL will have wordpress in the domain. However, if you are new to blogging and do not yet have your own domain, this is a great way to get started with your blog. You simply enter the username you would like and your email. WordPress will create your blog and email you the password.

Note – if you choose a Wordpress.com blog, read the TOS carefully. Wordpress.com is very picky about commercial blogs, and places limits on advertising.

There are many different Wordpress themes to choose from, enabling you to create a blog that fits your website and target market. You can further customize your blog by adding widgets, such as a calendar, RSS feed, links and other items to the sidebar. You can also change and customize the entire theme by editing the Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) of your blog.

When good blogs go bad

What do you do when a blog just isn’t working for you in the way it’s supposed to?

Easy. Drop the blog and start another one.

I’ve got many blogs – some for my own interests and work, and others which I work on for my copywriting clients – and occasionally, it becomes obvious that a blog isn’t working.

Decisions: import your old blog’s post, or start afresh?

You can import the posts from your original blog, but after doing this several times with mixed results, I just start a new blog.

The advantages of a new blog are:

* Your old blog’s post keep their Page Rank

* You save time – it’s easy just to create a final post with the new blog’s URL, so people can find it

* Your old blog may occasionally surprise you when a post or two catches fire, and the blog’s suddenly gathering lots of attention and links.

So if a blog’s not living up to your expectations, don’t mess around. Start afresh. There’s always room for one more blog. :-)

Bloggers and blogging – are you determined to fail?

During the week I received an email message which took me to task for being “misleading” about blogging’s money-making potential.

The writer said she had many blogs, and wasn’t making a high income; and she knew of many other bloggers who weren’t either.

Here’s my response:

Yes, I know that the money-making stats for 95 per cent of bloggers are woeful.

The fact remains that corporate bloggers can and do make from $1000 to
$1500 a week. I know one “ghost” blogger who’s making $2500 a week.

I think Steve Pavlina, who’s an entrepreneurial blogger, makes upwards
of $1000 a day.

So the money’s there to be made. In fact, I’ve got no doubt at all
that some high profile bloggers are turning their blogs into
million-dollar enterprises – viz Lifehacker, Tom Peters, etc.

BUT…

Unfortunately, because of the low cost of entry (zero) most bloggers
will never use their blog to anywhere near its full potential.

Reasons: lack of knowledge, lack of commitment, and lack of focus.

The costs of entry to blogging are very low, however, if you build your knowledge, blog consistently with focus, and continue to learn, the sky’s the limit on your potential.

If you’re determined to fail at blogging, you will. On the other hand, if you’re determined on success, you’ll succeed. My Blogging for Dollars ebook puts you on the highway to success.
