Five steps to help you to make money blogging

by angela.booth on June 27, 2007

I’ve been writing professionally for 30 years, and if there’s an easier way to make money than blogging, I haven’t found it – and I’ve looked.

So how do you make money blogging? Most new bloggers want to make the process more complex than it is. Keep it simple. The more simple your process, the more relaxing it is, and the more money you’ll make.

Here are five steps to a money-making blog:

1. Decide on how you’ll monetize your blog before you start. You can make money by adding advertisements to your blog, blogging about affiliate products for which you get a commission, and blogging for others as a pro blogger. This decision is vital.

2. Think about your audience for your blog: what does your audience want? Make a list.

3. Choose a blogging platform that’s consistent with your abilities. If you’re not a geek, choose a hosted platform like Blogger or TypePad. If you like to fiddle and want a powerful platform, choose WordPress and set up the blog on your own domain.

4. Create content. If writing’s a chore, you can develop a photo, video or podcast blog. Or you can use others’ content, gleaned from article directories. (Be sure to follow the Terms of Service. If you make a mistake, you can find yourself banned from the search engines and sued.)

How much money you make from your blog and content depends on you. Some pro bloggers make great incomes. If you’re committed to blogging, you can too. Remember that your blog is an online property: it’s real estate. In time to come, you may want to sell your blog, and you can certainly do so.

5. Stay current with what’s happening with the search engines and in the blogosphere. Blogging has fashions and trends. Keep up.
