Blog linking schemes and memes: gunpowder plots which can blow up your blog

by angela.booth on July 1, 2007

Building links to your blog is an easy way to increase your traffic. The more links, the more traffic, so there are always a number of linking schemes and memes which are going on in the blogosphere, and between static Web sites.

BUT there’s a real challenge, and it’s this: the search engines, specifically Google, hate being manipulated. They can and do remove sites from their index which seem to be manipulating them. From Google’s quality guidelines:

These quality guidelines cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed here (e.g. tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites). It’s not safe to assume that just because a specific deceptive technique isn’t included on this page, Google approves of it.

I avoid linking schemes. I hate the idea that a blog I’ve worked hard on will suddenly blow up – completely vanish from Google’s index. And yes, it does happen.

If you choose to participate in any of these schemes: remember they’re gunpowder. They can blow up your blog.
