Many bloggers start out with great enthusiasm. They make five or ten posts over the course of a week or two, then they stop posting. Usually it’s because they’re bored. “Blogging is HARD” some of my blogging students tell me.
Here’s my answer: it’s not, if you’re yourself on your blog.
Think about it. If you’re yourself, you can blog exactly as you speak. You don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not. Blogging your own ideas and opinions is fun – it will keep your enthusiasm for your blog high, and the more you can maintain your enthusiasm, the more you’ll blog.
Blogging your own ideas also ensures that your blog posts are original – no one else has had your experiences.
When you’re yourself, you can use a blog as a branding tool. This is very useful, because you’ll make contacts. I know of several bloggers who’ve been headhunted because of their blog.
How to be yourself
* Write as you speak, use a casual conversational tone;
* Avoid blogging if you’re annoyed or are feeling snarly, the tone comes across in your blog;
* Grow a thick skin. Occasionally you’ll get a nasty comment or two on your blog. If these are completely irrelevant or egregious, delete them. It’s your blog and you make the rules: if others want a platform, they can start their own blog;
* If you make an error on a blog post, and you might, then redline the mistake in your blog post, or make an update to the post, then move on. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s no big deal.
