This question comes up again and again in Web publishing and marketing forums: “I want to make X dollars this month… Can you show me how to make X dollars per month FAST… My affiliate blog hasn’t made any sales, when will I make a sale?”
Here’s my answer: It all depends.
I know people who’ve created affiliate product blogs with three posts who made sales on their first day, and continue to make sales.
I know pro bloggers who tossed up a quick portfolio blog with two posts, were promptly hired under contract, and now make excellent money blogging for several blogs. They’ve never added a word to their mini-blogs – they don’t need to, their blogs perform their function well.
OTOH, I know bloggers who’ve been blogging faithfully for six months, and have made $4.96 with AdSense.
Here are two essentials to help you to make money with your blog as soon as possible:
1. Decide on your blog’s mission and goal. No single blog can do everything that you want it to do. This blog’s mission, for example, is to provide added material for my Blogging for Dollars ebook; that’s its one and only goal.
If you’ve yet to start your first blog, FIND THAT MISSION. If you’re already blogging, the same applies – find your mission: create some new categories for your new mission-centric posts, and blog away, keeping your mission firmly in mind. It’s rarely necessary to start over, but that’s always an option. And remember, you don’t have to create huge blogs. You can create blogs for a single purpose: I call them drive-by blogs.
2. Realize that you need to promote your blog. The affiliate blogger I mentioned above spends heavily on Pay Per Click advertising. As long as his profits out-weigh his adspend, he’s happy.
