Over on my Web writing blog, I’ve written an article about experimentation: “WEB WRITING AND EXPERIMENTATION: YOU’VE GOT TO TRY STUFF”.

Everything in the article applies to bloggers too, whether you’re blogging under contract for someone else, or are creating your own money-making blogs.

Knowingly or not, bloggers lie: no one can tell you the complete truth

You can read as many blogs as you like, but please be discriminating. Yes, other bloggers will tell you what (often) works, but:

* They may not have tested what they tell you, they may just be repeating what they’ve heard;

* They’ve left out the “secret sauce” – either because a vital ingredient for success is so obvious that it goes without saying, or because they want to cut down on the competition; and

* The Web changes every day. Google and the other search engines are constantly changing their algorithms to provide a better experience for searchers, new sites spring up, older sites incur penalties, new technologies are developed… and on, and on.

Only you know what will work for you, and you find out by being prepared to test, tinker, and experiment on your blogs.
