When you’ve been blogging for a month or two, and your site is indexed, your referrer logs are a great source of inspiration for content, because your site’s visitors will tell you what they’re looking for.
For example, I’ve just looked at my StatTraq daily summary for this blog, and “wordpress photography themes” attracted several unique visitors. Other visitors searched for “blogger jobs” and “wordpress ebook.”
I could write additional posts on these topics if I wanted to – but not today.
Your referrer logs contain blogging gold – and dross
It’s a good idea to copy the info in your logs into a text file, with the date, and the number of searches. With this info handy, you’ll always have something to write about.
Your blog’s referrer logs also tell you what topics to avoid. On another blog I once posted a humorous item about a heavily-searched term. Big mistake. For months, my blog’s traffic consisted 80 per cent of people looking for information on this term. Unfortunately, that particular term had nothing to do with the mission/ purpose of the blog, and there wasn’t any way I could monetize the traffic. I almost deleted the post in annoyance, but I left it in place: lesson learned.
When you use the information in your logs and give your visitors what they want, your blog will grow organically. So if you’re a new blogger, don’t panic about content – you will always have something to write about because your visitors will tell you what they’re interested in.
