Simple is better when it comes to blogs’ SEO because search engines change their algorithms constantly to improve search results.
Keeping blog SEO simple
To keep it simple:
* Make your post’s title clear and concise. Yes, I know there’s a school of thought which emphasizes blog “headlines” and cutesy titles. The idea being that you rope in readers in any way you can. Fair enough. BUT you’re trading SEO benefits for cute: it’s up to you do decide whether the trade is worth it. For me it usually isn’t.
If I wanted to be cute, I could think of a dozen post titles which are jazzier and more appealing than “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on your blog – keep it simple”, but I hope that for years to come, if searchers want some quick info on blog SEO, they’ll find this post. A cutesy title will never be found by searchers;
* Use your keywords in your tags, and in the blog post itself. Don’t go overboard with the keywords;
* Link to your own blog posts. WordPress’s plugins make this easy. There are many “related” plugins. I use Aizatto’s Related Posts on this blog;
* Develop content strategies to “own” certain keywords. Watch your log file, and see what people are searching for. If a particular set of keywords is popular, and there aren’t too many competing pages, set out to own those keywords by creating posts for them.
So there you have it: simple, sensible and easy SEO for your blog.
