There are some interesting ideas on Kent Newsome’s post: “From Creation to Abandonment: the 5 Stages of Blogging”. It offers an excellent examination of some bloggers’ experiences which begin with high enthusiasm when starting a blog.
He says: “The low financial and technical barrier to entry results in many hastily created blogs that end up abandoned during one of the early stages due to boredom or the lack of a genuine interest in blogging.”
The “low financial and technical barrier to entry” may be a key. It’s very easy to start a blog with applications like Blogger, and that very ease may lead to unrealistic expectations. Click, type, click, click, and you’re done.
Unfortunately any blog you create on the spur of the moment rarely works out and leads to the two blogging mistakes I discussed in a previous post.
Prepare first, before you start blogging
I emphasize preparation in my blogging course. Preparation counts: if you start a blog in two minutes, that’s less time than it takes you to slip on your shoes, grab your sunglasses and keys and drive to the supermarket.
Your blog deserves more preparation time than you devote to a short shopping trip. When you’ve decided on what you want from your blog, and have mapped out a tentative plan, thought about your audience and monetization (if you’re money-blogging) – and have WRITTEN IT DOWN… you’re still not ready.
You also need to devote time to a title, your keywords, your categories and to developing a marketing plan.
And more.
If you’re starting a blog, please prepare first, so you can become a happy blogger with a blog that you and your readers enjoy.
