Blogging gigs are proliferating. I get several inquiries each week, most of which (the good ones) I pass on to other writers.
Marshall Kirkpatrick has just started a private wiki to introduce professional bloggers and the companies which want to hire them. This is a great idea.
Marshall has realistic ideas on pay for bloggers:
How much should you pay a blogger?
I am asked frequently how much a company should pay a blogger. I find that bloggers who are paid per-post generally get paid between $10 and $20 per post by good sites for general interest topics… The most serious blogs should be paid for on a monthly basis, not per post. I believe that top-tier bloggers that will be tied closely to your brand should be paid between $5k and $8k per month. Pay your blogger well, communicate with them clearly about expectations and if it doesn’t seem worth it after some time then fire them and find a new one.
As I point out to my blogging students, if you enjoy blogging, you can be very well paid to blog. However, you need to set your own rates.
If someone wants to hire you at pitiable rates, it doesn’t mean you need to accept. Companies hiring bloggers need to be EDUCATED on what blogging involves. Blogging consistently takes time, energy and commitment. Point out the value that a blog will add: it’s only reasonable that you should be well-recompensed.
You’ll find that if you do a great job on a blog, you will get the payment you deserve – but you need to ask for it.
