Blogging: what are blogging’s payoffs for you?

by angela.booth on August 15, 2007

Whenever I chat with a blogger, I ask them why they blog. What are the benefits of blogging? After all, a blog takes time, energy and commitment. Everyone’s busy.

Invariably when I talk to writers who blog, they say something like: “I wish I’d started my blog years ago!” Getting known is important to writers, but many writers are unaware of the importance of building an audience for their writing – they want to leave it to publishers, which means it never gets done. A blog shows writers that real people are reading their words: this is inspiring.

Business people who blog are interested in the traffic that a blog brings to their Web site. Blogs generate traffic because they’re frequently updated. This isn’t news – but the increase in sales and the development of new business which results from blogging is BIG news.

Individuals who blog find that blogs are life-changing.

So, some of the benefits of blogging:

* a blog is a business, and just like a business, it will grow, and you can sell it at some stage if you wish;

* you become visible online, so people approach you to work with them;

* a blog is a publication, so you can monetize your blog in the same way that magazines are monetized – with adverting and by selling products;

* you can use your blog to get blogging gigs, and more companies are looking for bloggers every day.

In “How I Became a Professional Blogger” Yehuda writes “The indirect results” of blogging:

I landed a professional blogging position at a company. I went in for a programming position and offered instead to be their company blogger. And they accepted.

I have had a game published by a publisher who is one my readers.

I’ve received dozens of free games to review.

My writing is getting better all the time.

What payoffs will YOU get from blogging? There’s only one way to find out. Start a blog and see.
