Marketing your blog: write a press release

by angela.booth on September 10, 2007

A press release is a great marketing tool. I call press releases the “marketing tools that keep on giving”, because press releases can work for you years after you’ve forgotten that you ever wrote them.

I’m still getting responses from press releases I wrote way back in 2001 for example.

Many small businesses get hung up on press releases, but they’re very simple. All you need to remember is that your press releases are FACTUAL; the cardinal sin of press releases is to make them read like advertisements, because they’re not. If any press release you write smells like advertising, you’ve just killed any chance that you’ll get media attention.

When your blog is established, sent out a press release

Once you have enough content, write and distribute a press release announcing your blog. Yes, you can certainly post it online, but I urge you to use the one venue where you’ll have the least competition, and that’s in your own local newspapers in your area of the world.

Target your press release to your local paper, and there’s every chance that your newspaper will pick it up and do a story on you. Once they do a story, larger media organizations may follow suit. It’s the backdoor way to making the news, and it works.

Not sure how to write a release? PR Web have an excellent template.
