Techcrunch has an interesting story on Google’s fight with Facebook, or rather, Google’s attempt to snatch back the traffic Facebook is getting: Google To “Out Open” Facebook On November 5, and says:

In the long run, Google seems to be planning to add a social layer on top of the entire suite of Google services, with Orkut as their initial main source of social graph information and, as I said above, possibly adding third party networks to the back end as well. Social networks would have little choice but to participate to get additional distribution and attention.

What does this mean to you as a blogger?

It means that you should start paying attention to Facebook NOW. Get yourself onto Facebook, and stream your blog’s RSS onto your Facebook page. Although Facebook is easy to use, you need to be familiar with the site to take advantage of the big changes in the offing. Once Google starts paying attention, you know something is BIG.

Use your iGoogle page too.

Way back in 2003, when Google bought Blogger, everyone’s reaction was… HUH? I’d started blogging seriously a couple of years earlier, so I had a suspicion of why. :-)

Roll on four years, and blogging is now very mainstream, and if you don’t have a blog, you’re missing out on a lot of traffic and money.

I’ve no idea how the Facebook/ Google social networking thing will play out, but I do know this: once Google starts paying attention, you should too.
