Your first blog: should you blog about blogging?

Since I offer coaching with Blogging for Dollars I have lots of contact with new bloggers, and I’m always amazed at how often students choose “blogging” as their topic for their first blog.

It’s natural to choose blogging because that’s what a new blogger is learning about. And while there’s nothing wrong with choosing “blogging” as a niche, it’s a difficult niche to break into. Not only that, for a new blogger, once you’ve blogged about the obvious things, you run out of material quickly.

So unless you have a real passion for blogging, consider another topic which is likely to make a consistent income, and in which you’re interested so that you won’t get bored over the long term.

Here’s how to build up a collection of topics for blogs:

* Make a list of your interests – what hobbies do you have? What TV shows do you watch? Are you interested in fashion? ;

* Consider your life stage: college, marriage, parenting, retirement – whatever life passage you’re in at the moment. Make a list of possible topics related to that life stage;

* Consider what you’re learning. For example, a friend’s taking cooking classes, so she’s started a cooking blog. Another friend’s taking golf lessons so she’s stared a golf blog :-) ;

* Visit Amazon.com and look at the nonfiction bestsellers to see what topics people are reading about.

The topic you choose for your first blog is important. Think about it for a while before you take the plunge.
