Blogger for Hire: read the fine print

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve just written an article for Blogging Tips about getting blogging gigs once you’ve built up some experience on your own blog. (The post will be published on February 27, 2008.)

One thing I didn’t mention in the post, was RIGHTS - as in, copyright. What rights are you selling when you blog for a company?

Don’t Sign Away Your Rights : The Blog Herald offers some great information:

“However, the excitement of being offered a new writing position often causes bloggers, as well as other writers, to make serious mistakes. When they receive their first contract, they either do not read the document carefully or, in a desperate bid to please their new employers, sign the contract with little regard to the rights that they surrender.”

“Work done for hire” - means you lose all rights

When you get a blogging job, you’re paid, so you’ll usually find that you’re in a “work done for hire” situation. This means that all rights transfer to your employer as soon as you’re paid. In most cases, if you’re paid well, this is fine.

However, remember that when you’re in a “work for hire” situation, you lose all rights; you can’t use what you wrote in a book or anywhere else.

Read the fine print when you sign blogging contracts.

Blogging Confidential: Top Five Blogging Secrets

A few years ago, blogging was a niche activity. Now blogging has become mainstream. Businesses small and large are blogging. But what’s a blog?

Essentially a blog is just a Web site. However, it’s a Web site in a special chronological format, so that as you “post”, or write a new blog item, that new item appears above all the items you’ve made in the past.

When you create a blog, you hope that it will become hugely successful, with many hundreds of thousands of readers each month. When it does, you can make a nice income from those readers.

Here are the top five secrets to creating a successful blog:

1. Create a specific focus for your blog

Your blog needs to be about something specific, so choose a topic to blog about. Choose any topic about which you have some knowledge, and about which you can write, such as photography, weight loss, or parenting.

2. Write your blog items in a casual, friendly way

Write your blog as if you were speaking to a good friend. Even if you’re writing a business blog, ensure that you write in a casual fashion. Avoid “business speak.”

3. Create a schedule for writing to your blog

The more items you post to your blog, the more traffic (readers) you’ll get. So blog to a schedule. You could blog once a day, or once a week.

4. Think about your readers: what do they want to know about your topic?

The more useful information or entertainment you provide, the more popular your blog will become. Think about your readers, and what they want to know about your blog’s topic. If you encourage comments, they will tell you what they want to know.

5. Your blog is a conversation: encourage comments

Think of your blog as a conversation with your readers. Ask readers to leave comments, by asking them questions. You can then respond to the comments they leave.

Get creative to get blog traffic

debtfree.jpg

I receive messages every week asking something like: “How come my pets/ cooking/ kids blog, which has been online for six months, and to which I post EVERY day only gets 50 readers a day?”

Now, 50 visitors a day is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, if you started out with definite goal in mind, you could surely parlay those 50 readers into a nice little income, but I digress.

To get traffic you’ve got to get creative. Think of those 175,000 new blogs which are created every day according to Technorati - like it or not, they’re your competitors for eyeballs.

What makes YOUR blog worth reading?

Think differently.

A cute blog I just discovered, My Debt Free Goal, is different. It’s a reality blog. Readers have a reason for returning: will this blogger get out of debt?

Everyone who comes to your blog has a reason for being there. You have to make it worth their while to stay for a moment, and to come back.

There are hundreds of ways you can get creative on any particular blog. Push yourself to develop some creative ideas.

You can do it. :-)
