Your blog – size matters, get more content

Someone asked me today: “How many posts does a money-making blog need to have?”

Here’s my honest answer: it depends. I’ve got a dinky little blog which has all of 15 posts, and it’s doing great. Another blog has 1800 posts, and the little one out-performs it.

The difference between the two blogs is that the bigger blog is in a  super-competitive niche, and in  those niches you’ll need a lot of content, and you’ll also need to post regularly in order to make any impression at all.

So should you avoid extremely competitive niches?

No. Competitive niches are competitive because people make money in these niches, so there’s no point in entering a niche where there’s little traffic, because little traffic (usually) means little income. (On the other hand, a niche where there’s little traffic, and you have products to sell can do very well indeed.)

The person asking the how-much-content question IS in a very competitive niche, and he has seven posts on his blog. I suggested he add more content to the blog by out-sourcing the content. He can afford to out-source because once the blog gets traction, he’ll get a great return on investment.
