If you blog, you know that the money you make depends on your traffic. Usually, the more traffic you get, the more income. However, that’s not always the case - even a low-traffic blog can make a great income.
For any blog or Web site, it’s not the amount of traffic you get, it’s the quality. When you get thousands of unique visitors who click away within seconds, they’re costing you money. On the other hand, if you get just a few hundred visitors a day and they convert, you’ve got the traffic you need.
For example, one of my blogs gets less than 50 unique visitors a day, but it makes a great income. Another blog gets a couple of thousand visitors a day and makes next to no income. Which blog would you rather own?
Get the Quality Traffic You Want when You Target Your Audience
My blogging students worry about traffic and my favorite question to them is: “What’s your conversion rate?”
The conversion rate is simply the percentage of unique visitors to your site which takes the action you want it to take. The actions could be to click on a link, to subscribe to your newsletter, or to buy a product.
If you have 1000 visitors a day, and not a single conversion, that’s a lot of wasted traffic. But if you get ten visitors a day, and five of them convert, this is great traffic - your conversion rate is an amazing 50 per cent.
So your aim is never just to “get traffic” - it’s to get traffic which CONVERTS.
Getting this traffic starts with targeting your audience, and ideally you’ll do this before you create your blog. Blogs are easy to create - a Blogger blog takes just a minute - but they can become useless time and energy sinks when they’re not targeted accurately.
If you have a blog you’ve spent time on that’s just not converting, my advice to you is to investigate the traffic you’re getting. Are any of your visitors taking the actions you want them to take? If so, discover what they want - if a search engine delivered them look at the search query terms they used: the keywords they used.
Once you know more about the visitors which are taking action, either create a new blog targeting that audience (redirect your old blog’s traffic to the new one), or sharply target your current blog solely to that part of your audience which converts.
You can make money with your blog: it’s simple. Give people what they want. Your low-traffic blog can make a great income when you get traffic which converts.
